You just finished your tour of the US and Latin America last month. Were there any signs you should have known it was a successful run?
HOYOUNG: Because we were going to so many cities, I want to make sure that a lot of people get to know VERIVERY and that we get the VERIVERY name out there.
Kangmin: I think what determines the success of a world tour is what looks on the faces of the fans and how they feel.
Jihyun: For me, if the fans revisit us, wherever we’ve been on tour, I think that just defines, “Wow, that’s a hit tour.” Also, a successful round completes it without anyone getting hurt.
Originally, VERIVERY was the first K-pop act to come back to tour the US in late 2021, which is exciting, but the COVID infection has cut it short. Did you take any precautions or different preparations this time?
HOYOUNG: We always do exercises, especially vocal ones. In fact, YEONHO has this tape that covers his mouth when he sleeps so he can breathe through his nose, it protects his throat. He keeps his throat slightly moist so he can sing better.
Yunho: Yes, it helps when it comes to the big notes so I had to get used to sleeping with that.
HOYOUNG: And we got to meet the fans face to face this time, and there were no more barriers for us. We can do hi touch [high fives] And take pictures with them. We autographed a fan in Los Angeles.
KANGMIN: We were kind of nervous because I can’t speak English! [Laughs]
Youngsung: Communication is very important.
True, but fans love you for things beyond language and You guys are doing a great job of expressing yourselves. Like the “O” series The era that included the songs you wrote and your first full-length album. How do you feel about the time period in general?
Dongon: After our last round [ended in 2021]We’ve been able to release multiple albums, and through that, I think our mindset got a little bit cooler and we were a little more relaxed. During the tour we had a lot of conversations with our members and a lot to talk about. We had some difficulties, but we managed to overcome them. And then during this tour, we were able to enjoy it more than ever before.
What kind of difficulties did you encounter?
Dongon: Well, there were just stressors big and small like jet lag and we weren’t able to control our mentality or our health either while we were on tour. That got a little sensitive. But just seeing our fans on tour allows us to get over that, and that mindset really changes all the time.
HOYOUNG: keyword for “O” series He embraced the darkness within us. When we first heard this was our story for our next album, we thought a lot about how we would try to communicate that to our fans. But as we started to progress through the albums, we found that we had a lot of time thinking about ourselves individually and about the darkness within us. I think that kind of made us think more maturely, grow a little bit, and become adults.
Dongon: Many people just have questions about their future and we were afraid for our future. We always think about our future, our team, our music and our dance. It can be very dark…
HOYOUNG: Adding a word to what DONGHEON said, after being a member of VERIVERY for four years, we think about the future because we know that an idol’s lifespan isn’t that long, to be honest, right? We think about the future, we think about us as a group and what more we can achieve. I think we are very energetic, outgoing and energetic, but all of our members have a lot on their minds. We’ve been through some tough times with so many thoughts on our minds, but we’re talking a lot as a group to get through this.
What do those conversations look like? Is it on the label? In sleep? at least?
HOYOUNG: We often meet in the hall [living room] And he speaks. Now that we’re all adults, even KANGMIN, we might have a little more to drink… [Group laughs] But we really try to take those times after rehearsals and rehearsals to try and reflect on our past practices to do better. Even when we fight, we try to end any discussion that day so that nothing can separate us or anything, as a team. The most we can do as a group is always talk to each other, and communicate with each other member to member. I think this is how our teamwork has improved a lot. Our captain usually just says, “Should we have dinner?” This is a kind of “let’s talk” sign.
Did you learn this habit from anyone? Did that happen naturally in the team?
HOYOUNG: We’ve been doing this since we were trainees but, to be honest, as trainees we were so desperate to debut. We trained on our own just to survive, to be honest. But after DONGHEON joined Jellyfish Entertainment, he helped us band together as a group. I think that’s how VERIVERY was formed. We have a lot to thank for him and I know the rest of the members all feel the same way I do now being a leader is not easy but he handles everything.
Do you feel pressure as a leader, Dongon? Is there a different kind of pressure when expanding into new places like America?
Dongon: I’m confused by the compliments. [Laughs] But it is very difficult because many members have many ideas and opinions. To be honest, this is very difficult, but I love it.
during “O” seriesWas there anything else you felt you needed to address individually versus as a group?
Youngsung: In my case, we had to stop the last round because of me. [YONGSEUNG and VERIVERY have a light laugh] I was so sad and disappointed in myself. It is very hard to let this feeling go. So, I was pretty disappointed, but now I think I’m over that. This time, this round is different. I exercise a lot with the members and I exercise a lot. Therefore, I wanted to show the next version of VERIVERY on this tour. In fact, I feel much more relaxed now.
Will the Americas continue to be the focus of your attention, guys?
HOYOUNG: America is a place we always thought we should go; It just suits us. Songs can really connect with fans, so it’s always been a place we thought we had to go, so we think about coming back often.
Minchan: And I want to say to global audiences, “I love you.” [Laughs] It’s a very important thing, isn’t it? At every show, I’ve received a huge amount of energy from the fans, so to keep up that momentum, we’re going to keep moving forward and enjoying ourselves. We will continue!
What’s the next step as you continue to move forward?
Youngsung: We have included a complete self-composed song in the full album. So, coming next, expect new self-composed songs.
Is this the vibe you guys are going for, trying to take more ownership of the music and the concepts?
Youngsung: In the tour, we performed “Crack It”, and we want to share more songs that we composed by ourselves.
HOYOUNG: What I’m thinking about is we did something dark, and I think we’re going to do something bright now. We’ve been through a lot of harsh darkness and now we’re going through a bright phase. I think this will end really well.
“Tap Tap” just dropped with HOYOUNG as co-writer and looks to be your biggest single to date. Tell me more about the point of view now with this song and opt-in – Father. Chase.
Youngsung: We’ve been through a lot of things like concerts and touring since we promoted our latest single “Undercover”. This is an album that emerges from those different experiences, as well as our first bright concept in a while, so hopefully it holds just as much meaning for fans as it does for us.
Minchan: It’s our first comeback with a bright concept since our debut era, and I hope we can prove to everyone that VERIVERY is capable of releasing bright and happy concepts as well.
Dongon: I hope this album will be able to offer a different experience because “Tap Tap” is a song that keeps you going even in winter. It’s a brighter, happier version of VERIVERY that people haven’t seen in a while, so I hope the song leads to more opportunities for everyone to laugh a little more.
HOYOUNG: I’m excited to show our VERRER how VERIVERY can roll out a brighter concept with nearly four years under our belt.
What do you want to tell VERRER fans at this point?
Minchan: I would like to thank all the fans who attended our show. We tried so hard for this tour. Please look forward to what’s next.
Jihyun: With the bright and bouncy song we are back with, VERIVERY will make sure to give everyone lots of love so we can all end the year happily.
